Italian food, what comes to mind? Pizza, ravioli, spaghetti, all matter of pasta, right? What would you say if I told you that one man wanted to get rid of pasta because he hated it, thinking it made Italians “gross, lazy, complacent, stupid, and worst of all, unfit for combat,”? (Hughes, 401). That man was Filippo Tommaso Marinetti. In his defense, the poor man did have a bad experience with pasta. While he was in army service on the Austrian front, the soldiers were always served the nastiest pasta: cold and congealed. Later on in his career as a Futurist, he told an interviewer: “Ugh! What piggish stuff, macaroni!” (Hughes, 401). Well, what did Marinetti have a hankering for when he was grumbly with hunger?
