When Bernini was my age, he was made a cavaliere, a papal knight. He was 23 years old, imagine! Most people today can’t say they’ve been knighted at the age of 23, I bet. Back in the day, Rome was the center of the art world, even today, tourists flock to the Eternal City to gawk and “oh and ah” over all the beautiful artwork that seems to be such a central part of any Roman experience.
Gian Lorenzo Bernini was born in Naples, Italy in 1598 and was the 6th child of thirteen born to Pietro Bernini and Angelica Galante. His father was a sculptor, who took his son to Rome with him at the young age of 8. This trip must have played a huge role in his desire to become an artist.
